The Complete Google Ads Account Audit You Can Run Yourself

You don't need an outside agency to catch the most common, most expensive problems sitting in a Google Ads account, most of them show up in reports you already have access to, you just need to know exactly where to look. This is a complete self-audit checklist covering account structure, wasted spend, tracking accuracy, and Quality Score, organized so you can work through your own account section by section as you read.

0

areas this audit covers: structure, spend, tracking, Quality Score, and ad relevance

90

minutes is roughly what a thorough first pass takes on a mid-sized account

1-10

Quality Score scale, keywords scoring below 5 are worth individual investigation

Monthly

a reasonable cadence for repeating this full audit on an active account

1. Account Structure

  • Check campaign-to-ad-group ratio. A single ad group covering wildly different products or services makes it impossible to write ad copy that's genuinely relevant to every keyword in it, tightly themed ad groups (3-15 closely related keywords) consistently outperform broad ones.
  • Confirm campaigns aren't competing against each other. Two campaigns bidding on overlapping keywords silently bid against your own account in the auction, driving up your own costs, check for keyword overlap across campaigns using the same or similar terms.
  • Verify budget allocation matches actual priority. Pull cost and conversion data by campaign, a campaign getting the largest budget share but the weakest return is worth a hard look, not automatic continuation.

2. Wasted Spend

  • Review the Search Terms report for irrelevant matches. Sort by cost, anything with meaningful spend and no conversions over 30-90 days is a negative keyword candidate.
  • Check device performance breakdown. Under Campaigns, Devices, compare cost and conversion rate by device, a device with meaningfully worse conversion rate but similar spend is a bid adjustment opportunity.
  • Check dayparting and day-of-week performance. If conversion rates vary meaningfully by hour or day, ad scheduling can shift budget toward when it actually converts.

3. Tracking Accuracy

  • Confirm conversion actions match real business value. A "Contact Page View" counted as a conversion alongside actual purchases inflates your numbers with events that aren't equally valuable, weight or separate them.
  • Check for duplicate conversion counting. If both Google Ads native tracking and an imported GA4 conversion are active for the same action, you may be double-counting, verify in the Conversions summary which source is primary.
  • Verify enhanced conversions or offline conversion imports are actually populated. A feature that's "enabled" but receiving no matched data provides zero benefit, check the diagnostics panel, not just the toggle state.

Audit by Account Size

Focus first on tracking accuracy, a small budget spent optimizing against broken or incomplete conversion data wastes a proportionally larger share of total spend than the same mistake in a bigger account.

Structure and wasted spend usually matter most here, accounts at this size have typically accumulated enough campaign history to show clear negative keyword and bid adjustment opportunities in the data.

Cross-campaign keyword overlap and budget misallocation across dozens of campaigns are the highest-leverage checks, manual review doesn't scale here, a script or a dedicated audit tool pulling account-wide data is usually necessary.

4. Quality Score and Ad Relevance

  • Add the Quality Score columns to your keyword view. Sort ascending, keywords scoring 1-4 are actively costing you more per click than they should and are worth individual review or pausing.
  • Check the three Quality Score components separately. Expected CTR, Ad Relevance, and Landing Page Experience each show as Below Average, Average, or Above Average, a low Landing Page Experience score specifically points to a fix outside the ad account entirely.
  • Confirm ad copy actually contains the keyword theme. A generic ad running across a tightly themed ad group misses an easy relevance win, check that headlines reflect what the ad group's keywords are actually about.

Common Findings

  • A handful of keywords account for most of the wasted spend. This is true in the large majority of accounts audited for the first time, waste concentrates rather than spreading evenly.
  • Conversion tracking has a gap nobody noticed. A tag that stopped firing after a site update months ago is one of the most common findings in a first audit, and one of the most expensive to have missed.
  • Budget follows history, not current performance. Campaigns often keep their original budget allocation long after the data justifies a different split.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I audit my own account?

Monthly for an active account with regular optimization already happening, quarterly at minimum for anything running on autopilot.

What's the single most valuable check on this list?

Tracking accuracy, every other optimization decision in the account depends on trusting the conversion data it's based on, a broken tracking setup makes every other check in this list unreliable.

Can I run this audit on a Performance Max campaign?

Partially, PMax's automated structure limits keyword-level and search term visibility compared to Search campaigns, focus on conversion tracking accuracy and asset group performance instead for PMax specifically.

A self-audit catches the majority of common, expensive issues, but structural problems, a Quality Score ceiling rooted in landing page architecture or a budget allocation across dozens of campaigns that needs full restructuring, often need more than a checklist to actually fix. If your self-audit turned up issues bigger than a quick pause or bid change, our Google Ads team can run a deeper audit and build the fix plan.
