AI Overviews Now Cover 48% of Google Searches: How to Get Cited, Not Buried
If you're still measuring SEO success by a blue link in position one, you're keeping score in a game Google stopped playing. AI Overviews now sit above the entire organic pack on nearly half of all searches, and most of the people who see one never scroll down to your listing at all.

What Changed the Math
AI Overviews covered roughly 34.5% of queries in December 2025. By March 2026 that number hit 48%. Seer Interactive's field study across 3,100+ queries found organic CTR falling from 1.76% to 0.61% once an Overview appears — and Pew found people click through only 8% of the time with one on screen, versus 15% without. Ranking #1 stopped guaranteeing a click the moment it stopped guaranteeing you were the answer.
- You're competing for the 17–39% of clicks left after the Overview
- Ranking #1 underneath it performs like a much lower position used to
- Traffic erosion shows up in GSC before anyone tells you why
- 35% more organic clicks than the plain #1 result below the answer
- 91% more paid clicks on the same query, per the same data
- You become the source people scroll up to verify, not just a link
GEO Isn't a New Discipline — It's SEO With New Homework
Google's own 2026 guidance is blunt about this: optimizing for AI features "is still SEO." The brands winning citations in 2026 are, almost without exception, the ones with strong E-E-A-T fundamentals already in place. GEO doesn't replace that work — it adds a layer of structure on top of it: content that's not just well-researched, but shaped so a model can lift the answer straight out of the page without losing accuracy in the process.
There's a second signal worth watching alongside this: February 2026's Discover Core Update rewarded original, timely, expertise-driven content from niche authorities over broad generalist coverage — the same direction GEO is pulling content in. Google isn't running two separate playbooks for classic search and AI search; it's running one, and both updates are enforcing it.
What Actually Gets You Cited
- Answer the question in the first two sentences, then support it — Overviews pull the extractable answer, not the buildup.
- Structure pages around real questions people ask, phrased the way they'd ask them, not the way a keyword tool phrases them.
- Back claims with named data, quotes, and sources — synthesis-friendly content is citation-friendly content.
- Ship FAQ and Article schema so the extractable answer is machine-readable, not just human-readable.
- Stay off the scaled, unoriginal AI-content pile — March 2026's spam update targeted exactly that, and it was Google's fastest ever.
None of this is a reason to abandon rankings — ranking is still the prerequisite for being considered at all. It's a reason to stop treating position one as the finish line. The finish line moved up one level, into the answer itself, and it's only getting more crowded from here.
