How to Set Up a Meta Campaign Now That Manual Targeting Is Gone
If you haven't opened Ads Manager to build a new campaign recently, here's what's waiting for you: the manual controls are gone. As of the v26.0 rollout, Meta merged manual and Advantage+ campaign creation into a single unified flow, and placement, audience, and creative decisions that used to be yours to set are now Advantage+ defaults you can no longer fully turn off. Plenty of advertisers built their entire playbook around manual control. That playbook needs a rewrite.
10-20
creative assets recommended per campaign, not variations of one
50
conversion events a week needed to exit the learning phase (10 for purchase/app install)
90%
of Meta's ad inventory is now vertical (9:16) format
7 days
Meta's own recommended minimum before touching a live campaign
What Actually Disappeared
The manual campaign flow used to let you hand-pick placements, build custom audiences from scratch, and lock creative to specific formats. In v26.0, that flow is gone for new campaigns: you now land in one unified setup screen with AI-driven toggles switched on by default, and several of them can't be switched back off. Instagram Explore Feed and Messenger Stories placements have been retired outright. Meta also rolled out Muse, an AI image generator built into Advantage+ creative tools, and added embedded appointment booking to Instant Forms, so a scheduling link from Calendly or HighLevel can load a calendar widget right on the thank-you page with the lead's details pre-filled.
None of this is optional anymore. The question isn't whether to use Advantage+, it's how to feed it well enough that the automation has something good to work with.
- Manually selected placements per platform and format
- Hand-built custom and lookalike audiences with exclusions
- Locked creative to specific placements and aspect ratios
- Placement distribution across Feed, Reels, Stories, and Messenger, set by the algorithm
- Broad AI-driven audience targeting beyond most manual restrictions
- Automatic creative adjustments to aspect ratio, on-image text, and even background music
Setting Up a Campaign Under the New Flow
- Pick the objective first. Sales, Leads, or App Promotion each route you into the unified Advantage+ setup. This decision matters more than it used to, since it now shapes most of what follows automatically.
- Confirm the Advantage+ campaign toggle is active. It's on by default, but check for it, since some legacy accounts still surface an older screen that needs a manual switch.
- Set your conversion event and Conversions API together. Configure CAPI alongside the Pixel and aim for an Event Match Quality score of 6 or higher - a low EMQ score is one of the fastest ways to quietly starve the algorithm of the signal it needs.
- Size your daily budget to your target CPA, not a round number. A rough formula that works: (target CPA × 50) ÷ 7. That's what it takes to clear roughly 50 conversion events a week per ad set, the threshold Meta uses to exit the learning phase (10 events for Purchase or App Install campaigns).
- Upload real creative variety, not five versions of the same ad. Aim for 10-20 distinct assets: vertical 9:16 for Reels and Stories, square 1:1 for Feed, and at least one carousel. Pair them with 3-5 primary text variations and 3-5 headline variations so Advantage+ Creative has real material to test combinations against.
- Leave it alone for at least seven days. Meta's own guidance is not to touch a campaign during the stabilization window. Every early edit resets signal the algorithm was still gathering.
The Real Lever Now Is Creative, Not Targeting
With placement and audience decisions largely out of your hands, creative volume and variety becomes the dominant factor in performance. A useful way to structure the asset list before you upload anything: build around four distinct angles rather than four versions of one angle. Problem-aware creative that names the pain point directly, solution-aware creative that shows the product in use, social proof built around reviews or UGC, and a direct comparison against the obvious alternative. Every asset should hook attention in the first three seconds and hold up with sound off, since a meaningful share of Reels and Stories inventory autoplays muted.
Meta's own reported benchmarks put Advantage+ Sales campaigns at roughly 32% higher ROAS and 17% lower CPA than manual campaigns, which tracks with what losing manual placement control actually does: it removes a lever advertisers were routinely getting wrong, and puts more weight on the one most accounts under-invest in, which is creative production at real volume.
If keeping a steady pipeline of 10-20 fresh, genuinely distinct assets running every month isn't something your team can sustain on top of everything else, that's the exact gap our Facebook & Meta Ads team is built to close.
