Meta Is Quietly Building Its Own Search Index So Its AI Does Not Have to Ask Google
Somewhere in server logs across the web, a crawler called Meta-WebIndexer has been quietly multiplying. Between mid-July and August 9, its share of tracked AI crawler traffic jumped from roughly 2% to nearly 38%, a 17x increase in under a month, from a single bot most site owners had never heard of before this summer. The working theory, backed by both the crawl data and an alleged internal message from Meta staff, is that Meta is building its own web index so its AI never has to ask Google for an answer again.

What the Crawl Data Actually Shows
Crawler tracking services logging AI bot activity across a large sample of sites recorded Meta-WebIndexer going from a negligible presence to nearly two-fifths of all AI crawler requests in a matter of weeks. That's not the pattern of a routine infrastructure update, it's the pattern of a company standing up an entirely new indexing operation and letting it run at scale immediately. Meta has technically been crawling the web since at least 2024 under a different agent, Meta-ExternalAgent, with multiple site owners over that period reporting unusually aggressive crawl volume, one Hacker News post cited roughly 50,000 hits from the bot alone.
Why Meta Would Want This
The reasoning, as described in a widely circulated account from a developer who says Meta staff reached out directly, comes down to dependency. If Meta AI has to route a web search through Google to answer a question, Google sees that query, and potentially benefits from the interaction data in ways that help Google's own models rather than Meta's. Building an independent index removes that dependency entirely: Meta AI can search the web, generate an answer, and cite a source without ever touching Google's infrastructure or handing Google a signal about what its users are asking.
That motivation lines up with a broader pattern across the industry. OpenAI, Perplexity, and others have all pushed toward reducing reliance on Google's search results for exactly the same reason, control over the answer layer, and the citation data that comes with it, is becoming as strategically important as the underlying model itself.
What This Means If You Publish Content
- There's a new crawler worth knowing by name. If your robots.txt blocks AI crawlers broadly or by specific user agent, Meta-WebIndexer and Meta-ExternalAgent are worth checking explicitly rather than assuming an existing rule already covers them.
- A new independent index means a new citation surface. If Meta AI stops routing through Google, being indexed well by Meta's own crawler becomes its own distinct visibility channel, separate from ranking well in Google or being cited by ChatGPT.
- The fundamentals don't change, the surface area does. Clean structured data, crawlable pages, and content built to be directly quotable are still what gets cited, they just now need to satisfy one more crawler with its own index rather than borrowing someone else's.
We've covered the mechanics of getting cited rather than buried as AI-generated answers take over more search behavior in our earlier look at AI Overviews and GEO, and the same underlying principles apply here: whichever company ends up running the index behind an AI answer, the content that gets pulled into that answer is still decided by the same technical and structural fundamentals. Meta simply becomes one more index worth being visible in, alongside Google's.
If you're not sure whether your site is crawlable, indexed cleanly, or structured in a way that survives being read by a machine rather than a person, that's exactly what a proper technical SEO audit is built to catch, regardless of which company's crawler shows up next.
