Threads Ads Without Instagram: What Changed in September 2026, What It Costs and Who It Suits

Since September 2026 you can run Threads ads without an Instagram profile. Meta has dropped the two requirements that kept many businesses away from the platform: a mandatory Instagram account and matching usernames on both networks. A business can now advertise directly from its own Threads profile.

For many companies this is the first realistic way into Threads without extra work. Below: what exactly changed, what an impression costs, how to set up a campaign, and who should and should not bother yet.

Short answer

Yes, since September 2026 you can run Threads ads without Instagram. Meta no longer requires matching usernames on Threads and Instagram, and businesses without Instagram can advertise from their native Threads profile. Threads access in the business portfolio is now separate. The rollout is gradual, so some accounts may not see it yet. Threads impressions are currently 30-40% cheaper than Instagram feed, but analysts expect the gap to shrink within a year.

What changed

Until September, Threads advertising was technically an extension of Instagram. To run an ad you needed an Instagram profile connected to the ad account, and the usernames on both networks had to match. Companies that only use Threads, or have no Instagram at all, could not advertise there.

Meta's official wording: starting in September 2026, matching usernames between Threads and Instagram profiles will no longer be required to run Threads ads, and businesses operating without an Instagram profile will be able to launch ads directly using their native Threads profile. Threads profiles also get their own task-based access in the business portfolio, independent of Instagram.

What changed in Threads advertising before and after September 2026

The practical result: Threads stops being an Instagram add-on and becomes a separate ad placement in its own right. You can run Threads under an expert's name or a brand with a different handle, give access only to the people who work on it, and leave Instagram untouched.

What Threads ads cost

Meta does not publish average prices, so the numbers below come from industry estimates. They differ between sources, but the picture is consistent: Threads impressions are noticeably cheaper than Instagram feed for now.

CPM and CPC ranges on Threads compared with Instagram feed
MetricThreadsInstagram feed
CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions)$5-15≈ $8-22
CPC (cost per click)$0.50-1.20$0.80-2.00
Advertiser competitionlowhigh

Why it is cheaper: there are still few advertisers on Threads, and in Meta's auction competition sets the price of an impression. That makes the advantage temporary. Analysts expect CPM to rise 15-25% over the next 6-12 months, and dropping the Instagram requirement will speed this up by letting in advertisers who were locked out before.

One more number from Meta itself: Advantage+ campaigns that include Threads among their placements have an 11.7% lower CPA on average. That does not make Threads cheap on its own. It means the algorithm benefits from one more place where it can buy low-cost impressions.

Important

A cheap impression is not a cheap customer. On Threads people read and argue rather than scroll through pictures. If your ad looks like an Instagram banner, you will get cheap impressions and expensive leads. Compare placements by cost per lead or sale, not by CPM.

How to run Threads ads without Instagram

  1. Threads profile. You need a business profile with a proper bio, avatar and at least a few real posts. Ads send people to your profile, and an empty page kills trust.
  2. Business portfolio. Add the Threads profile to your Meta business portfolio and give access to the people who will run ads. These are now separate permissions, independent of Instagram.
  3. Ad account. The Threads profile must belong to the same business portfolio as the ad account.
  4. Campaign. In Ads Manager set the objective and audience as usual. For placements either keep Advantage+ (Threads will be included) or manually select only Threads if you want to test the platform on its own.
  5. Identity. At ad level choose your Threads profile as the identity instead of Instagram.
  6. Tracking. Without the pixel and Conversions API you will only see clicks. Make sure site events reach Meta, otherwise the algorithm will optimize for clickers.

If your account still asks for Instagram, that is expected: Meta is rolling the change out gradually. Check again in a few weeks.

Who Threads ads make sense for

  • Experts and B2B services. Threads is a text network. Consultants, lawyers, agencies, SaaS and education sell through ideas rather than images.
  • Brands without Instagram. Threads used to be closed to them. Now it is a new channel that does not require building a visual Instagram presence first.
  • Advertisers with an expensive Instagram. If Instagram feed CPM keeps climbing, a Threads test is the easiest way to find cheaper impressions inside the same Ads Manager.
  • Those willing to write. The best Threads ads look like ordinary posts: a short point, a specific number, a bit of provocation.

Who should wait

  • Businesses where the photo sells. Fashion, interiors and food sell better where people look rather than read.
  • Budgets of a few hundred dollars a month. Splitting a small budget across placements means none of them gets enough data.
  • Accounts without working conversion tracking. Fix tracking first, then add placements.

How to test Threads without risk

The fairest test is a separate campaign or ad set with only the Threads placement, using the same audience and objective as your main campaign. Give it 2-3 weeks and compare cost per lead, not CPM. Write creatives for Threads: 2-4 lines of text, no sales tone, one clear call to action.

At the same time keep Threads inside Advantage+ placements in your main campaigns. The placement breakdown in reports will show how much budget the algorithm sends there on its own and what it gets in return.

Tip

The cheap-impression window is open until competitors arrive. If Threads fits your niche, test now rather than after prices catch up with Instagram.
