Lawyer Ads Cost Up to $314 per Click: Law Firm Marketing in 2026, From Google Ads to TikTok
$314. That is what Google estimates a top-of-page click can cost for a personal injury query in the US. Even the median bid across all legal queries, $36, is higher than in almost any other niche we have analysed. On top of that, lawyers advertise under constraints: professional conduct rules prohibit misleading claims and, in many jurisdictions, limit how clients may be approached.
Below: how many people actually search for a lawyer, what a click and a client cost, which channels work for which practice areas, and how to combine them so enquiries get cheaper and clients get better.

legal searches a month in the UK cluster
Demand for lawyers is far larger than any single keyword suggests: "law firm" alone gets 74,000 US searches a month, while the full legal cluster runs to several million. Fast enquiries come from Google search ads, Local Services Ads and the Google Business Profile map pack. The trust that makes those enquiries cheaper is built by SEO, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. B2B practices add LinkedIn. Across every channel the essentials are the same: no promises of outcomes, separate campaigns and pages for each practice area, and tracking calls and messages, not just forms.
How many people actually search for a lawyer
Look up a single phrase in Keyword Planner and the legal niche can look small. But people search for lawyers in dozens of ways: by practice area, by city, with "lawyer", "attorney" or "solicitor", with modifiers like "near me", "free consultation" or "no win no fee". We collected the whole cluster and removed obvious duplicates.
In the UK, "solicitors near me" gets 33,100 searches a month, while the cluster totals around 305,000, nine times more. In the US the gap is wider still. And these are lower-bound estimates: the planner omits many rare phrasings, and those make up the long tail of legal queries such as "can my landlord keep my deposit" or "what to do after a car accident that wasn't my fault".
What people search for
In the US, the largest single queries are for estate planning, personal injury, divorce and family law, and car accidents. Each practice area also has hundreds of variants around the headline query. Volume is only half the story, though: estate planning has high volume and relatively low bids, while personal injury combines high volume with the most expensive clicks in the whole niche, because a single case can be worth tens of thousands of dollars in fees.
Advertise specific practice areas, not "legal services", with separate campaigns and pages. Someone searching "car accident lawyer Houston" should land on a car accident page, not a homepage listing twenty services.
What a click and a client cost
The median top-of-page bid estimate is $36.04 in the US, $21.99 in the UK and $3.13 in Ukraine. These are Google's estimates for the top position, not actual costs per click, which are usually lower. The upper quartile in the US runs above $128, and personal injury queries reach $314.
Click price matters less than client cost. A single divorce, estate or injury case can be worth thousands in fees, so even an expensive click pays off, provided conversion from click to consultation and from consultation to retained client is tracked and managed.
What lawyer advertising may and may not say
In the US, rules are set by state bars, most of them based on the ABA Model Rules. Rule 7.1 prohibits false or misleading communications about a lawyer's services, and Rule 7.3 restricts direct solicitation of prospective clients. In England and Wales, the SRA requires solicitors' publicity to be accurate and not misleading. Across jurisdictions the practical meaning is the same: advertising works with facts, such as years of experience, practice area, consultation format and fees, not with promises of results or claims to be "the best".
Google allows advertising for legal services in general, with specific restrictions in some categories: bail bond services, for example, cannot be advertised in the US.
Channels: what works and when
Google Ads: search
The fastest channel for people who need a lawyer now: an arrest, an accident, divorce papers served. What matters:
- A separate campaign for each practice area, with its own budget and landing page.
- Negatives from day one: jobs, careers, salary, template, form, essay, free (if you do not offer free consultations), do-it-yourself instructions.
- A schedule matched to the case type: criminal defence around the clock, family and contract work during business hours.
- Tracking calls and messages: most people phone rather than fill in a form. We covered call tracking in our call tracking guide.
Local Services Ads
In the US and several other markets, law firms can run Local Services Ads: pay-per-lead listings above the search ads, with a Google Screened badge after verification. They suit personal injury, family, criminal defence, immigration and estate practices. You pay for qualified calls and messages rather than clicks, and can dispute leads that are not genuine.
Google Business Profile
The map pack for "lawyer near me" and "solicitor in [district]" is nearly free and converts very well. What is needed: the right category, address, opening hours, office photos, practice area descriptions and, above all, reviews. Reviews are the strongest trust signal for a lawyer, so every successful matter should end with a request for one.
SEO and site content
People research legal questions themselves first: "how long does a divorce take", "what is my car accident claim worth", "do I need a will". A page that answers such a question honestly and offers a consultation brings clients who already trust you. Results take 3-9 months, but search enquiries are usually the cheapest and best. For Google and for people, named lawyers, their experience and real anonymised case outcomes are key trust signals.
Facebook and Instagram
These work as channels for expert content and lead generation: short explainer videos, stories answering questions, lead forms. Lead forms should include qualifying questions: practice area, location, urgency. Without them, forms fill up with people looking for free advice.
TikTok
Short explainers of people's rights can reach hundreds of thousands of viewers for free. Direct enquiries from TikTok are usually few, but it builds name recognition, and someone who has seen a lawyer in several videos later searches for them by name on Google.
YouTube
Long explanations of complex topics, such as dividing assets in a divorce, probate or tax disputes, build trust no ad copy can. These videos also appear in Google search and bring traffic for a long time.
For corporate, tax, employment law and business advisory. Clients here are owners and directors, and what works is a lawyer's personal profile with regular posts, not advertising.
How to combine the channels
| Practice area | Main channel | Support |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal defence | Google search ads, 24/7 | Local Services Ads, reviews |
| Personal injury, accidents | Google search ads, Local Services Ads | Google Business Profile, YouTube |
| Family law, divorce | Google search ads, SEO | Instagram, YouTube |
| Estate planning, probate | SEO, Google search ads | YouTube, Facebook |
| Immigration | Google search ads, SEO | TikTok, Instagram in relevant languages |
| Business, tax, corporate law | LinkedIn, SEO | Google ads on narrow queries |
The logic: fast channels catch people who need a lawyer today, while slow channels make sure that when the need arises, the person already knows your name. When both work together, the share of branded enquiries grows and cost per client falls.
How to measure results
- Calls with a duration threshold, not taps on a phone number.
- Messages from chat and messaging buttons as a separate conversion.
- Forms with a practice area field, so you can see which campaigns bring which cases.
- Consultations and retained clients in the CRM: how many enquiries became paid consultations and signed matters. Only that shows real cost per client.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| One "legal services" campaign | Expensive and cheap matters are mixed; budget goes where it is easiest |
| Ads pointing to the homepage | The visitor does not see their problem and moves on |
| Promises in ad copy | Breaches of conduct rules and complaints |
| No negative keywords | Budget spent on students, job seekers and DIY searches |
| Only forms are tracked | Calls and messages, the main source of enquiries, stay invisible |
| Free consultations with no filter | Many enquiries, few clients |
Frequently asked questions
What budget does a law firm need for Google Ads?
It depends on practice area and city. Work backwards: how many clients you need a month, what share of enquiries become clients, and the click price in your area. General benchmarks are in our article on Google Ads costs.
Are free consultations a good idea?
They increase enquiries but lower their quality. A workable compromise is a short free case assessment by phone and a paid full consultation whose fee is credited against the engagement.
Local Services Ads or search ads?
Where available, both. Local Services Ads bring verified, pay-per-lead enquiries at the top of the page; search ads give control over queries, practice areas and landing pages. Many firms start with Local Services Ads and add search campaigns for specific high-value practice areas.
Can lawyers advertise on Google?
Yes. Google allows legal services advertising in general, with some restricted categories, and content limits are set by professional conduct rules: no misleading claims and no guarantees of results.
Where the data comes from
Search volumes and bid estimates come from Google Keyword Planner, September 2026, for the US, the UK and Ukraine. The cluster was built from a broad seed set with duplicates removed, so the figures are lower-bound estimates. Bid estimates are not actual costs per click. Conduct rules are summarised at a general level; check the specific rules of your state bar or regulator before launching.
