Google Ads for Plumbers 2026: An Emergency Plumber Click Costs $76. What to Bid On and What to Block

$76.38. That is what one click on "emergency plumber" costs in the US on average - not a call, not a booked job, just one person tapping your ad. "24 hour plumber" is right behind it at $74.31. Meanwhile "drain cleaning" costs $13.92 a click, and "plumbing jobs" costs $2.85 and brings you nobody who will ever pay you.

Below: what Google Ads clicks cost for plumbers in the US and the UK, service by service, from our own Keyword Planner pull in October 2026. Then the budget math, the campaign structure we would build for a plumbing company, and the negatives and tracking you need before you spend a dollar.

Short answer

In the US, a click on "plumber" costs $34.32 on average, "plumber near me" costs $39.45, and urgent searches like "emergency plumber" cost $76.38. In the UK the same searches are much cheaper: $6.96 for "plumber" and $21.52 for "emergency plumber". Urgency is the biggest price driver, so split emergency and scheduled work into separate campaigns with their own budgets, schedules and landing pages. Block job seekers and DIY searches with negative keywords from day one. Track calls, not just form fills, and only switch to smart bidding once you can see which clicks turn into paying jobs.

What Google Ads clicks cost for plumbers, by service

Bar chart of average cost per click for US plumbing search terms in 2026, from emergency plumber at $76.38 down to how to unclog a drain at $2.67

The US data splits cleanly into three groups.

  • Urgent and high-value work: $42-77 a click. "Emergency plumber" ($76.38), "24 hour plumber" ($74.31), "repipe" ($53.96), "water heater repair" ($48.95) and "clogged drain" ($42.70). These people have water on the floor or no hot water, and every plumber in town is bidding for them.
  • Core and scheduled work: $14-40 a click. "Plumber near me" ($39.45), "plumber" ($34.32), "water heater installation" ($29.91), "sewer line repair" ($28.60), "toilet repair" ($24.42), "drain cleaning" ($13.92). These bring the bulk of the volume: "plumber" and "plumber near me" alone add up to 1,496,000 searches a month.
  • Job seekers and DIY: under $3 a click. "Plumbing jobs" ($2.85) and "how to unclog a drain" ($2.67). They are cheap because nobody earns money from them.

Note that "clogged drain" ($42.70) costs about 3.1x more than "drain cleaning" ($13.92) for the same job: the first sounds like a problem right now, the second is broader and also attracts price shoppers and product searches. Low-volume terms like "burst pipe repair" (1,600 searches, $21.12) look cheap, but averages on small volumes move a lot, so treat them as a rough guide.

The UK plumbing market: cheaper clicks, different services

Bar chart of average cost per click for UK plumbing search terms in 2026, from emergency plumber at $21.52 down to burst pipe at $4.31

UK clicks cost a fraction of US ones. "Plumber" is $6.96, about 4.9x cheaper than in the US, and "plumber near me" is $8.09. But the same rule applies: "emergency plumber" ($21.52) costs about 3.1x more than "plumber", and "24 hour plumber" ($21.13) is right next to it.

The service mix is also different. UK plumbers fix boilers and unblock drains, so "boiler repair" ($9.99), "blocked drain" ($13.07) and "drain unblocking" ($6.03, 27,100 searches a month) belong in a UK account. "Bathroom fitters" ($5.98) is a separate, project-based audience that deserves its own campaign. Watch out for "plumbing course": at $6.43 it costs almost as much as "plumber", so in the UK the training searches are not even cheap - just useless.

For context, here is the same "plumber" search in five countries, in the local language: US $34.32, UK $6.96, Germany ("klempner") $5.77, Poland ("hydraulik") $1.55, Ukraine ("сантехник") $0.15. A US click costs about 5.9x a German one and about 22x a Polish one. For the full picture across niches, see our Google Ads CPC by country breakdown.

Budget math: what $3,000 a month buys

Here is a worked example for a US plumber. The conversion rate is an illustrative assumption, not data: assume that 1 in 10 clicks becomes a call or a form (10%), and test 5% and 15% as the bad and good cases.

  • Clicks: $3,000 ÷ $39.45 ("plumber near me") = about 76 clicks a month.
  • Leads: 76 × 10% = about 7.6 calls or forms. At 5% it is 3.8, at 15% it is 11.4.
  • Cost per lead: $3,000 ÷ 7.6 = about $395. The range is $263-789 depending on the conversion rate.

Now run the same budget on emergency terms only. $3,000 ÷ $76.38 = about 39 clicks. At the same assumed 10%, that is about 3.9 leads, or roughly $764 per lead. Emergency leads cost about twice as much, which only makes sense if your emergency call-outs earn at least twice as much.

The question is not "is $395 a lot?" but "what is a lead worth to me?" Not every lead becomes a job, so divide the cost per lead by your profit per job to see what share of leads you must close just to break even. If your average job is worth $800 in gross profit, $395 ÷ $800 means you need to close about half of these leads (49%) to break even. If your average job is worth $X, plug in your own number - and use profit, not revenue. Our ROI, ROMI and ROAS calculator does the rest.

In the UK, the same math is gentler: $1,500 ÷ $8.09 = about 185 clicks, which at an assumed 10% is about 18.5 leads at roughly $81 each.

Campaign structure that works for plumbers

  • Separate emergency from scheduled work. One campaign for "emergency", "24 hour", "burst pipe" and "clogged drain"; another for water heaters, repiping, sewer lines and installations. Different click prices and values need their own budgets.
  • Ad groups by service. Water heater repair, drain cleaning, leak detection, sewer line repair, garbage disposal and toilet repair each get their own ad group and ad copy. In the UK, add boiler repair and drain unblocking, and keep bathroom fitting in a separate campaign.
  • Tight location radius. Target the area your vans can actually reach in reasonable time, set to "Presence: people in or regularly in your targeted locations". A call from outside your service area is a click you paid for and cannot serve.
  • Ad schedule by campaign. Run the emergency campaign 24/7 only if someone really answers the phone at 3 a.m. Run scheduled work during office hours, when you can book the job. Our guide to ad schedule by day and hour shows how to read this from your own data.
  • Call assets and call-only ads on mobile. Someone with a leak wants to call, not fill in a form. Add your number to every ad and test call-only ads for emergency terms.
  • A landing page per service. The "water heater repair" ad should land on a water heater repair page with your phone number, service area and reviews - not on the homepage.
  • Local Services Ads as a complement. In the US, UK and Canada, plumbers can run Local Services Ads alongside Search. You pay per lead; compare cost per booked job with Search.
  • Smart bidding only after tracking works. Start with manual CPC or Maximize clicks with a bid cap; move to Maximize conversions or target CPA once call and form conversions are reliable.

Negative keywords starter list for plumbers

Job-seeker and DIY searches are the cheapest in the data - "plumbing jobs" at $2.85 and "how to unclog a drain" at $2.67 in the US - but cheap does not mean useful. They never become customers. Add these as negatives from day one:

Adapt it to your business: if you sell parts, remove "supplies". Then check the search terms report every week for the first month. Our negative keywords guide explains match types and shared lists.

Tracking: calls first, then jobs

For plumbers, the phone call is the main lead. Track only forms and Google optimizes for the wrong thing. You need three layers:

  1. Call tracking: calls from ads (call assets and call-only ads) and calls from the website via a Google forwarding number or a call tracking tool, with a minimum call length so wrong numbers do not count. See our Google Ads call tracking guide.
  2. Form tracking: only the real "thank you" event, not page views of the contact page.
  3. Job import: send back to Google Ads which leads became paying jobs and how much they were worth. See enhanced conversions for leads with a CRM.

Common mistakes we see in audits

  • Conversion tracking is broken or counts the wrong thing, such as page views or every call regardless of length.
  • No call tracking at all, so the account looks like it produces almost nothing.
  • Job seekers and DIY searchers clicking ads, because there are no negative keywords.
  • One campaign for everything, so emergency and scheduled work share one budget and one schedule.
  • All traffic sent to the homepage instead of service pages.
  • Emergency ads running overnight when nobody answers the phone.
  • Smart bidding switched on before there is any reliable conversion data.
Important

An emergency click costs $76.38 in the US. If your phone goes to voicemail at night, every missed call is money spent for nothing. Run 24/7 ads only if you can answer 24/7.

Tip

Start with your most profitable service, not the cheapest click. A few well-tracked campaigns teach you more than a broad account that spreads the budget thin.

FAQ

How much does Google Ads cost for plumbers?

In the US, the average click costs $34.32 for "plumber", $39.45 for "plumber near me" and $76.38 for "emergency plumber". In the UK, the same searches cost $6.96, $8.09 and $21.52.

Is Google Ads worth it for plumbers?

It can be: people searching "plumber near me" need a plumber now. Whether it pays depends on your cost per lead, close rate and job value, so run the budget math above with your own numbers.

Why is "emergency plumber" so expensive?

Because urgent searches convert quickly and every plumber wants them. In the US, "emergency plumber" costs about 5.5x more per click than "drain cleaning" ($76.38 vs $13.92). Keep emergency terms in a separate campaign so you can control that spend.

Should plumbers use Local Services Ads or Google Search ads?

Both, where available. Local Services Ads charge per lead; Search ads give more control over services, keywords and landing pages. Compare cost per booked job from each.

Which keywords should plumbers avoid?

Job-seeker terms ("plumbing jobs", "plumbing course"), DIY terms ("how to unclog a drain") and supply or parts searches. They are often cheap, but they do not bring paying customers.

Methodology and sources

All figures come from Google Keyword Planner via the Google Ads API: average CPC in USD over the last 12 months, monthly search volume and top-of-page bid ranges, pulled in October 2026. The conversion rates and job values in the budget section are illustrative assumptions for the example, not data.

Not sure whether your plumbing campaigns are paying for emergency calls or for job seekers? Our Google Ads audit checks your search terms, structure and tracking, and shows where the budget leaks.
